Women's Sober Living
The environment of drug treatment facilities is quite regimented, supervised, and clinical. Avoiding drugs and alcohol is much easier when you are constantly being looked after. There are always counseling sessions to attend, 12-Step meetings to go to, group discussions and a variety of other activities that continually keep you focused on recovery and keep you occupied as well. What is going to happen when you are no longer being looked after? When you have time on your hands and nothing to do? When you no longer have other people there who are equally committed to getting well to communicate with at all hours of the day and night?
Each women's sober living house has tightly knit sisterhood of women in early recovery. The core of the program is sincere involvement in Alcoholic Anonymous, taking the Twelve Steps, and learning the Big Book. As they learn to build strong and meaningful relationships with other women in recovery, the residents provide encouragement, guidance and confidence for one another. Life at women's sober living houses provides opportunity and the freedom to become strong in their 12 Step programs as they learn to make healthy life decisions. This is where the adventure of life in recovery begins.
Many people wonder how a women's sober living environment works. Women's sober living facilities are very much like an apartment building, a large home, or a dormitory. All of the residents are women, and all are involved in recovery. The strong sense of sisterhood and community among the residents is created from sharing a firm commitment to recovery. The female residents work together using skills learned in treatment to support one another in early sobriety. The sober women's residences provide a safe and secure place to start the lifelong journey of recovery.
All residents of a women's sober living environment are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings and to keep in touch with other recovering alcoholics and drug addicts. They provide the perfect support system for the newly clean and sober woman. The beautiful thing about using the 12-step program is that the people who attend 12-step meetings seek to discover ways to live fulfilling lives without drugs and alcohol.
