The ABCs of Sober Living & Sober Living Homes
What Is A Sober Living Facility?
In the most basic sense, a sober living facility, or just a sober living in “recovery speak,” is a home in which a group of recovering addicts and alcoholics live together under the assumption of a shared commitment to sobriety. Unlike in an inpatient facility, addicts in a sober living are free to come and go as they please, provided they are home by an agreed-upon curfew. Every sober living home will differ in terms of its rules and regulations (some require household chores, 12-step meeting attendance, house meetings, etc.) but the one thing most homes have in common is their commitment to ensuring a safe, sober, and supportive environment for addicts in early recovery.
Sober Living Homes Offer Just The Right Amount of Structure
The common mission of all sober living homes (mentioned above) is also what makes sober living homes such a smart housing option for men and women in the early stage of their recovery. For many addicts and alcoholics, returning to their old home environments can pose a serious threat to their sobriety. Familiar places and faces can act as triggers to the addict’s “using brain,” inspiring them to want to obtain and use their drug of choice one more time. A sober living home, however, offers the addict the chance to live in an environment with a zero-tolerance policy towards drug and alcohol use. More importantly, it provides the addict with a community of like-minded individuals with whom to share their daily struggles and triumphs.
How Do I Select A Sober Living House That’s Right For Me?
Luckily, there are nearly as many different types of sober living homes as there are addicts and alcoholics in recovery. If you are a gay addict with an affinity for exotic parrots, there is a sober living home just for you! All kidding aside, most metropolitan areas play host to a vast network of sober livings, making it easy for you to find the sober living house that best suits your needs. Some examples of more specific, targeted sober living facilities include (but are not limited to) all-female sober livings, all-male sober livings, pet-friendly sober livings, executive sober livings, and dual-diagnosis sober livings.
