Outpatient Drug Rehab

There are several different kinds of outpatient drug rehab and aftercare programs including intensive outpatient care, weekly and bi-weekly outpatient individual and group therapy sessions. Alcoholics and drug addicts in outpatient drug rehab are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings and to keep in touch with other recovering alcoholics and drug addicts. The beautiful thing about using the 12-step program is that the people who attend 12-step meetings in outpatient drug rehab seek to discover ways to live fulfilling lives without drugs and alcohol. They provide the perfect support system for the newly sober alcoholic or drug addict.

Adjusting to life in the outside world can be a serious challenge for the newly sober addict or alcoholic. 12-step meetings help the newly sober person in outpatient drug rehab to make connections with other drug addicts and alcoholics who have insight and wisdom as well as practical advice to share with newly sober people. Strong bonds of friendship often grow out of attending 12-step meetings. There are a variety of formats for 12-step meetings in the world of outpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Some are speaker meetings where attendants listen to a chosen fellow addict or alcoholic share their story of recovery. Other meetings offer the chance for everyone to share a small part of their own story with everyone in the room.

The 12-step meetings give newly sober alcoholics and drug addicts in outpatient drug rehab the opportunity to be of service to other attendants of the meeting through a variety of commitments. Recovering addicts and alcoholics in outpatient care are encouraged to believe strongly in the principles behind the 12-step programs. When alcoholism and addiction are treated as a disease rather than a type of weakness of character or other disorder, it allows both the client and the friends and family of the client to be more accepting and easily achieve a positive outlook on the treatment. A commitment can be making coffee, doing dishes, greeting people at the door, or arranging chairs. It is strongly suggested that aftercare clients attend a minimum of one 12-step meeting a day for at least 90 days after leaving the treatment facility.
