Alternative Drug Rehab: A Different Approach

Recently many new forms of drug addiction rehabilitation have become available. Some of these new programs have shown impressive results and are known as “non-traditional” methods. These different approaches to rehabilitation create opportunities for all kinds of addicts to live drug free lives. These non-traditional programs include such diverse treatments as acupuncture, amino acid treatments, homeopathic therapies, body cleansing, holistic drug rehab, and faith based drug rehab.

Many of the alternative drug rehab centers focus primarily on holistic drug rehab. Holistic rehab works by developing the peace of mind of the patient, helping him or her find a balance in life. The most common components of a holistic drug rehab include yoga, transcendental meditation, acupuncture, and other eastern methods which help develop connectivity between mind, body, and spirit.

Faith based drug rehab takes a spiritual approach to the treatment of drug addicts. These rehabs combine the twelve steps with the Bible and a connection to a higher power in order to help the patient recover. There are many similarities between faith based programs and 12 step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.

There is another type of non-traditional treatment using amino acids. In amino acid therapy, patients are treated with amino acids given over a period of 10, 15 or 21 days. With the help of amino acid, the brain receives the same stimulation that it did from the addictive substance, eliminating cravings naturally.

There are special alternative drug rehab centers for women and gay or lesbian patients. These progressive facilities specialize in counseling that deals with the root causes of addiction among gay and lesbian individuals, including family problems, peer pressure, or isolation and confusion. A better understanding of these issues helps to provide better treatment. There are also many drug rehabs which offer women an opportunity to heal in a safe and non-threatening environment.
